Get away to Schaumburg Land!

Experience Schaumburg Land for a short break, for a holiday or as a day trip. Biking excursions, hiking, pilgrimages, wellness offerings and culture provide many opportunities for recreation and relaxation.

The Schaumburg Land is a region in Lower Saxony that is located between Lake Steinhude, Schaumburg Forest, Westphalia and the Weser River with the Weser Mountains and the Deister Hills. It came into being in the Middle Ages as a territory belonging to the Earl of Schaumburg and is an old and rich cultural landscape. Its location on the edge of the Central Uplands means that the natural landscape is also in full bloom. The varied scenery also extends into cultural attractions. And it is not only the cities that shine with their architecture and other works of art; the villages also have some real surprises in store.

The Schaumburg Land is characterised by its wide range of cultural attractions, making it a great destination for connoisseurs, whether they are active in sports and enjoy the numerous themed biking routes, are looking for hiking and pilgrimage paths or are more interested in the cultural routes to the many worthwhile destinations waiting to be discovered. Gastronomy in the Schaumburg Land, which also has top-class restaurants, will surely round off any stay in a truly delightful way.

Wilhelm Busch, creator of the well-known literary figures Max und Moritz and also known as the ‘grandfather of the comic’, was born in 1832 in Wiedensahl in modern-day Schaumburg and lived in the quiet seclusion of his home village for more than 40 years. This is where most of his illustrated stories were created and also one major work of painting and poetry. He expresses his love of his homeland is his own way:

‘My closest acquaintances left for Italy: I did consider accompanying them at one point; but then I thought about our good, traditional German Spring, which I hope to enjoy again this year with great devotion. Not long ago I saw a basket of camellias, fresh from Naples, next to our native water lilies; the one as if created by our dear Lord, the other looking as though a confectioner had poured raspberry syrup over them.’
