Obernkirchen
A guided tour of the city is more than worthwhile. Around 9,300 residents now live in the city center and the four villages of Gelldorf, Krainhagen, Röhrkasten and Vehlen. Obernkirchen is the home of the famous sandstone. Numerous important buildings such as the Cologne Cathedral were built from Obernkirchen sandstone.
Every three years the international sculpture symposium takes place in Obernkirchen. On the sculpture trail, visitors will find works of art that were created during the eleven sculpture symposiums that have taken place so far. An exciting hike also takes visitors to the unique dinosaur tracks in the sandstone quarries on the Bückeberg. The hiker has fantastic views of the North German Plain.
Numerous leisure activities, such as a golf course and a heated outdoor pool with a season from April to October, also offer visitors a lot of attractive things. Group travelers have overnight accommodation, seminar and leisure opportunities on the Bückeberg in the JBF center and in the west wing of the Obernkirchen monastery in the core city area.
Due to the central location of the city, Obernkirchen was chosen when looking for a location for the district hospital. With the 440 beds of the clinic, Obernkirchen has now also become the medical center of the district. Obernkirchen can look back on more than 400 years of city rights. The beginnings of the city go back to the 8th century. The mountain and town museum on the church square with its branches offers an interesting overview of the history of Obernkirchen.
