Around the Steinhuder Meer
This wonderful hike takes us around the Steinhuder Meer in the nature park of the same name through unspoilt natural and lakeside landscapes.
With this extensive hike around the largest inland lake in northwest Germany, the Steinhuder Meer, a wonderful nature experience awaits us. The lake lies in the middle of the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, most of which is protected as a nature or landscape reserve. The lake was formed after the last ice age. It has a surface area of about 31 square kilometres and an astonishingly shallow average water depth of only 1.50 metres. Nevertheless, the lake offers many opportunities for water sports such as sailing or surfing and, of course, for swimming. The main towns on Lake Steinhude are Steinhude in the south and Mardorf in the north, small historic villages. In the former fishing village of Steinhude, for example, the fishing and weaving museum, the toy museum and the butterfly farm are worth a visit. Mardorf is particularly attractive because of the many beautiful half-timbered houses in the centre of the village and the long lakeside promenade with bathing and surfing beach. Overall,
