On the Boniface Route from Mainz to Fulda
The pilgrimage route takes us over 185 km along the route of St. Boniface's funeral procession from Mainz to St. Boniface's Cathedral in Fulda. Along the way, we cross the varied landscapes of the Rheingau, the Wetterau, the Vogelsberg and the Fuldaer Land.
The pilgrimage route, opened in 2004, follows the footsteps of the funeral procession that led the body of St. Boniface from Mainz to Fulda in 754. The route between the two bishoprics is based on old roads and other paths that have been used since prehistoric times. The 185 km pilgrimage route ends at the saint's tomb in Fulda Cathedral. In between lie varied landscapes and picturesque towns: After crossing the Rhine, we follow the Main and hike through the vineyards of the Rheingau. We continue through Hessen's granary, the Wetterau, with its fields and orchards, before crossing the wooded volcanic landscape of the Vogelsberg and finally reaching our destination in the Fuldaer Land. &Uml;überall along the route you will find monasteries, chapels, churches and other spiritual or secular sights. Buildings such as the Romanesque cathedral in Mainz or its Baroque counterpart in Fulda are just two examples of the many cultural highlights that await us on this tour. The entire route
